Today I Shall Open My Camera Box — A Poem, And Other Somewhat Related Thoughts

steak_knife

Today I shall ease a steak knife

tenderly along the sealing tape.

Maybe out on the back deck

on this lovely birdsong morning.

Other great places to meet

my new camera might be…

Botanical Gardens

Buckingham Palace

somewhere in Rome

Up on the roof (maybe not such a great idea with the sharp knife.)

Up in my tree. (again, the knife.)

Down at the lake park.

Endless possibilities

this late morning

with spring dripping

from the leaves

and from my hair

and the cats eyes

he who is enjoying

the birdfest debut.

~~ end of poem.

(written 2 mornings ago.)

Since I penned the above,

I have indeed opened my new camera!

In our own living room, Friday night.

Here’s the very first photo I took with it

Saturday afternoon outside the taco shop…

dandelion_whoooohooooooo

Now, bear in mind, that other than dialing up macro

and pushing what was hopefully the shutter button,

I had NO idea what I was doing with the new camera.

I dedicate that dandelion to Talon

who is waiting for her flowers to bloom.

But maybe for the snow to melt first!

Talon, a blog-garden friend of great depth and beauty,

she who brings us many blooms via her lens and words.

Coincedentally, I DID take my still-unopened toy with me Friday, to a couple places.

But no moment seemed quite right to finally meet my new camera.

The library…

library_camera_guitar

And a restaurant, where you can see my daughter’s elbow only…

kerby_lane

as she was diving under the table, embarassed her mom was taking such a photo.

She’s long since over it tho! And much happy water under the bridge in the meantime.

Like the Marathon Kids Finisher Ceremony Saturday at noon. That was fun!

grey_day

It was a grey, misty day, but lovely.

(All pix in this post by iPhone.)

(Except Talon’s dandelion, of course!)

🙂

Now, to go pick up that child from the sleepover birthday party.

I bet they had a blast!!

Jannie And The Wonderful, Excellent, All-Good, Fabulous Yesterday

Just Good Stuff, Photography | Posted by Jannie on 23 February 2011 @ 1:27 PM 43 Comments

The Child awoke uncomplainingly and dressed with a song and dance.

The Chick Filet drive-thru peeps filled my cup nice and full, whoohoooo — I LOVE when that happens!

funster_field

By 8:20 a.m. Kelly had finished her last half mile for Marathon Kids 2010-2011. Medal ceremony this Saturday!

Next photo — winter weary friends — please brace yourselves.  Live flowers ahead…

daffodils_in_texas_feb_22

Daffodils were jumping out at drivers.

best_pen_in_the_world

I found the EXACT black pen I LOVE, at the first place I stopped!!

Those of you who are intimate with Pilot Precise Vs know the many-spendored thrill of them.

window_dance

Did a little happy dance in a store window on the way back to the car.

10_more_years

Sat in an Internet cafe and filled out my green card renewal ap.  (Yep, $450 for that.)

Ate a bean, cheese and egg taco there — not bad.

Popped over to the P.O. and mailed my ap. Yesssssss!!!

Bloghopped a while.

Then, (sorry no visuals) ….

Ate lunch.

Met Kalyani at Jim’s shop where she dropped off her car for service.

Drove Kalyani home.

Picked up Kelly from school.

Ran a couple errands.

Took her to the Dollar Store where with her own money, of her own initiative, and with me waiting outside the store, she bought anniversary surprises for Jim and me.

We were married 19 years yesterday!!!

Went home.

Took bath.

Took Kelly to gymnastics.

tumble_track_2011

Took that pic through the big plate-glass gymnastics viewing window.

all_dressed_up

Took that pic of me in the viewing area, all dressed up for our anniversary dinner!

Jim called not feeling so well (has my yuckkies from last week) to ask for a rain check on dinner.

No prob!

Went home.

We all ate good food.

I drank beer.

Kelly gave us our presents.

anniversary_2011 Green and white sparkly flowers in a plastic vase for me, and for Jim — plastic salt and pepper shakers and some pencil erasers!!!!!

I gave Jim his dollar store anniversary surprise  — a collage photo frame to fill with updated family pix for his office.

And he gave me my surprise, and  HOLY COW, WHAT A SURPRISE…

AN AMAZING NEW CAMERA!!!

long_awaited_camera

The exact one I was saving for — $249.99, but he snagged it for $199.99 with an Instant Rebate, whooohoooo!!!

What a freaking awesome husband, child, day and universe, eh??!!!

(A new camera because the iPhone takes decent pix in only about 10% of lighting situations.)

kitkat_camera

My New Camera is so precious I can’t quite bring myself to take it out of the box yet.

But I will.  Oh yes, I will.

Eventually — and probably quite soon!

And dear Snaggle, I made these all 780px wide today, instead of my regular 790px, hoping they’ll load faster for you.

I do try to think of my friends.  I really do.

P.S. There was more fabulous excellent stuff yesterday too, but how much can you people take in one post!!?!??

Laguna Gloria, Austin Texas

laguna_gloria__4_June_2010

One time a girl and her mother stepped out of a Honda

in Austin, Texas onto the grounds of a castle in Spain.

laguna_gloria__3_June_2010_a

Or was it Italy?

The Mother gets those romance lands all mixed up.

Anyhoo, the Girl and The Mother

lunched on linen (or at least pretended to,)

then strolled the grounds with parasols

laguna_down_to_the_water

down the statued path

through the gazebo garden

past wide palms

and ancient oaks

to the marsh at the lake.

(Marsh left to your imagination.)

And eventually back to the Honda again.

This Honda… (You’ve seen it before enricing my her life.)

enriced

(‘cept these days I, whoops — I mean “The Mother” is back in a Toyota.)

After The Mother posts this she will lunch,

then Google the chords for “All Along The Watch Tower,”

which she is excited about learning on her blue Pignose guitar,

the guitar The Child was playing in this photo when she was 5,

the guitar The Mother got when she was in The Funsters band.

blue_pignose_guitar_age_5

The Mother is thinking those chords might come in handy

for a new song she is writing called “Banana Seat Bicycle.”

Then The Mother will head out to lop 10 small tree branches to

start making table centrepieces for the big gala next month.

(That last part is the God’s-honest truth!)

(More in a future post, on what may end up being 60 centerpieces!)

See y’all later, my Cuties!

xoxo

* Laguna Gloria Museum in the heart of Austin, Texas — formerly a private villa, now a gallery and art school. (Lovely pix to see by clicking that link.)

All these broken-arm girl photos taken at Laguna Gloria with The Mother’s  iPhone 3GS, June, 2010.  Child was then 8.

Thank You, Kind Stranger — in 55 words

Photography | Posted by Jannie on 6 January 2011 @ 5:55 PM 48 Comments

redbud_isle_january_2010

Me with iPhone last Sunday

asking The Husband and Child

to pose by the cypress.

Stranger pipes up,

“Hey, want me to take one

with all three of you?”

“Sure!” I jumpingly grin.

“Just don’t run off with our phone,”

The Husband jokes.

Stranger laughs

then taps the screen,

his simple kindness

rippling through

our lives forever.

That was a life-slice in 55 words for The One, The Only, G-man.

Post a 55, let G-Man know and he’ll write interesting things on your blog.

Imagined From My Songwriting Chair While Listening To Neighborhood Construction

Photography, Poetry, The Pea | Posted by Jannie on 2 December 2010 @ 5:55 PM 61 Comments

Little_snow_white_Disneyland_2005

The workmen one street over

are bouncing on pogo sticks

atop slabs awaiting framing.

They are constantly singing,

earlier Leonard Cohen mostly.

Sometimes Neil Diamond.

Occasional Madonna.

Now they are beating drums

and marching, the guy with the

nail gun spinning cartwheels,

the one dressed as Snow White

twirling dual flaming batons

and contemplating sequins.
