If you’re going to Galveston, TX you might find the rainforest pyramid one cool little spot.

girls_of_the_rainforest

A big spot, actually — 10 stories high.

room_to_grow

With room to grow.

moody_rainforest

We wandered habitats on three levels — floor, water cloud and canopy.

rainforest_girls

I was totally captivated.

I drank 2 beers and danced with the monkeys who asked to remain unphotographed.

forest_rain

Even saw rain!

moody_mist

Mist too.

colorful

Pretty camera-shy birds.

so_green

Flying free.

blu

Apparently over 1000 species of tropical flora and fauna call the pyramid home, but I only spotted 999.

caught_a_butterfly

REAL butterfly, not photoshopped.

(Both children in this post are real too.)

great_pyramids

Much to see and do in Galveston, but the Moody Rainforest was my fave spot.

Highly recommended for all that ails ya.

There Are Churches — a poem in 72 words

Photography, Poetry | Posted by Jannie on 1 August 2011 @ 7:03 PM 35 Comments

United_Methodist_window

There are churches of words that poets yet unborn

will preside over oceans, hills and boardrooms with.

There are churches of moss by woodsy streams in which

mice will serve up hors d’oeuvres and dance tonight.

earths_core

There are churches in our veins, running on the same iron

that won the wild west and keeps bubbling in a core soup.

But mostly, there are churches in your smile

and in the gift of every good thought you think.

The Day I Heard Mary Died

long after I got Jim’s call at the Krispy Kreme
long after Kalyani was there to catch my fall

pool_letter

I wrote a letter to Aunt Sue on my best stationery.

No sense having all those real-pressed-flower
fine cotton papers just hanging around in boxes
with no one getting any enjoyment out of them.

letter_to_auntie

Aunt Sue has recently gone deaf
and I miss our phone calls.

business_card

She is Dad’s “baby” sister
for whom yours truly is named.

Dad also has one brother living,
Uncle Ken, on the adjacent farm
in the Canadian Maritimes

Aunt Sue lives near Toronto.

Uncle Wes, Uncle Wayne, Aunt Jean, Aunt Bess and Aunt Day have all passed on.

hummingbird_stamps

Used the last of my old humming bird stamps on her letter.

And that return address label.

I got the Smiley Face stickers as a surprise in a
Wonderful Package from this fine fine lady.
I’ll explain them in a post here one day.

So, one off my list, whooooohoooo. I’m on letters-writing fire now, people!!

This is Jo’s card I’m still writing on…

Pretty, eh?  On linen-laid cotton.

Raoul Dufy’s “The Baie des Anges at Nice” — 1926.

letter_to_Jo

Remember Jo — my “panpal” since 1994?

Remember us at that pub in England in 1999?

Pan_pals_1999

And here we are with her daughter Pascell, the first time they came to Texas…

What year was that, Jo? 1997? ’98?

And Jo recently…

And after I was home from writing Aunt Sue’s letter that day I snapped this with my iPhone…

first_mieshka

Mieshka had been with us 2 days.

There you have it for today.

With love, from Jannie Sue Muffin.

P.S. I see I actually had the date wrong on Aunt Sue’s letter. That Friday was really the 15th, not the 16th.

Maya Angelou On Independence & Success

Ass Kicking, Photography, The Pea | Posted by Jannie on 3 July 2011 @ 11:55 AM 29 Comments

austin_kayaking_2010

Child, everybody knows you popped out about as independent as a kid gets

but there’ll be times on your journey you’ll need a peptalk, as we all do.

And who better to pep you up than Maya Angelou, whom I fell in love with

forever about as deeply as I fell in love with and will stay in love with you.

Dr. Angelou advises…

“The most important single thing, beyond discipline and creativity is daring to dare.”

“To those who are given much, much is expected.”

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

“Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.”

“If you are not good to yourself, how can you expect anyone else to be good to you?” *

“You alone are enough. You have nothing to prove to anybody.”

“Live as though life was created for you.”

“Whenever you decide something with an open heart, you usually make the right decision.” **

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”

“When you get, give. When you learn, teach.”

austin_kayaks1

Dr. Angelou also advises the following, but please don’t read until you’re 12, due to mild language.

In fact, don’t read any of this blog until you’re 12, okay. Thanks!!

“I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.

Those old enough to read this blog, I hope Dr. Angelou’s wisdom enriches your journey today.

I know she has mine!!

With love from Jannie-Mom.

(2 iPhone pix from about a year ago)

* and ** were actually written in first person, but I changed them to “you,” because I’m quite the rebel, as you know.
